1 hr vs 167 hrs - Coaches are outmatched!
You get 1 hour with your client. Their life gets the other 167. Guess which one has more influence. Think of it like a plant. You can take a struggling plant, water it, give it the best hour of attention it's ever had. Then you put it back in the same dark corner. A week later it's still dying. In the session, your client agrees with everything you say. Partly because it's a good plan. Partly because you're the coach, and it's hard to say no. In behavioural terms that's pliance: following a rule for the approval that comes with it. Here's the catch: Pliance ends when the call ends. At home there's a partner who wants a hand with dinner. Kids who need picking up. A boss who wants a report. These aren't distractions. They're things your client cares about. And the environment has something you don't: more hours, a physical presence, and plenty of ways to nudge and prod your client. So the new goal you and the client set together slides to the bottom of the list. That's why a plan isn't finished when your client says yes. It's finished when you've accounted for everyone else who has influence. Before your next client leaves the call, ask them two questions: "What in your life (people, events, worries, commitments) is going to get in the way of this?" "What can we do about it?" Then treat those people as stakeholders whose buy-in you need. Not as obstacles to your authority. You're not the only coach in their life. This is one way that we diagnose why clients get stuck. @Heather Wilson so many competing contingencies! The things that win are either more reinforcing for them or less punishing, and they give instant relief rather than a future, uncertain, possible payoff later on.

Chronic symptoms that never fully let go? Join a free 30-minute healing session
Your body has been struggling for a long time. You’ve probably tried a lot already, and part of you is just tired of waiting for relief. This Tuesday I’m holding a 30-minute collective healing session for exactly that. 📅 Tuesday, October 20 · 5:00–5:30pm (Paris time) 📍 Here’s the link 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀: We gather first, I explain briefly what we’ll do, then for 20 minutes you simply sit and notice while I send healing energy to what the group needs. There is nothing to prepare, only a space without distractions. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽: It feels like a meditation, but it goes deeper because of the healing energy and the collective we create together. Your body is always trying to heal. Sometimes it just needs a little help from the outside to settle into the calm state where that can happen. I’m Ettjen, and I work with people with chronic and mystery illnesses. I do this remotely, so you can join from your couch or your bed, and it works just as well as in person. Can’t make it live? There’s no replay, but message me beforehand (DM me) and I’ll include you in the session, even if you can’t be online. I post my findings afterwards in my free Skool community, Navigate Chronic Fatigue. These sessions are free to join for now. Soon they’ll move to a premium tier, so come along while they’re open to everyone.

This Is What Happens When You Go Premium in The Classifieds 👀
Go premium and post your event in @Shannon Boyer The Skool Classifieds community, and lots of members will join your community. Of course, this is not guaranteed, but not only can they join your community, but they also add the date of your event to their calendar. 🟰 More members join your event, and more members join your community 🤷‍♂️ And Shannon also pins a post about your event. @Heather Wilson and I will keep posting about this until we're blue in the face. Well, Heather will 😁 Note: To do this, you have to join premium and also take Shannon's presentation course, and each event is $10.

@Des Dreckett, yeah. I was happily doing events in my community, but our discussion triggered me to think differently – I had already signed up for the massively valued VIP in Skool Events Daily so it was a no-brainer to move on to external events

@Des Dreckett I upgraded within moments of joining. What a fantastic idea!
Procrastination is rewarding
is isScrolling. Snacking. Checking email instead of doing deep work. People tend to call these "bad habits". And that's why they never go away. Calling a behaviour "bad" doesn't explain why it keeps happening. Nothing your nervous system does is meaningless. If a behaviour is still happening, something is rewarding for it. A lot of the time, that reward is Relief. Your client sits down to the hard thing. The stress builds. Their phone goes bing, and they turn to Messenger notifications or scrolling Instagram. That's an instant hit of relief. So the "bad habit" is a solution. A very effective one, to a problem your client hasn't named yet. Here's where coaching can go wrong. If you don't know what the behaviour is rewarding, you can't change it. You're asking your client to walk away from something that reliably makes them feel better, in exchange for nothing but a vague sense that they should. That's not a fair fight. The old habit will win every time. So stop asking "how do I get them to stop?" Start asking "what's the payoff?" That Payoff is the fourth part of our behavioural LOOP. All four parts together show you exactly why your client is stuck. Finding that something is what the workshop Why Clients Don't Do the Work is about. Join Us 7pm UK October 26th

@Des Dreckett yeah, because things are so ingrained. It doesn't mean I'm an expert in my own life! But I do understand how to help other people! Would you care to share your most interesting bad habit, or one that's less interesting, if you're happy to share it?
