The Mom test
One useful framework from The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick is this:
Stop asking people if your idea is good.
Start asking about the problem they’re already trying to solve.
If you ask:
“Would you buy this?”
You’ll usually get polite answers.
If you ask:
“Tell me about the last time you had this problem.”
You’ll get useful answers.
That’s the difference.
People are experts on their frustrations.
They’re not always experts on the solution.
For example, instead of asking:
“Would you like a new AI course?”
Ask:
“What’s the biggest thing slowing you down when using AI?”
If the same problem keeps coming up, that’s a clue.
The framework is simple:
Problems
→ Conversations
→ Patterns
→ Solutions
You’re not trying to get people to approve your idea.
You’re trying to understand what they’re already struggling with, what they’ve already tried, and what they would actually value enough to act on.
Question:
What is one better question you could ask your audience this week?
