"How long should this take?"
One of the most common DMs I get: "I've been at this wheel for four hours, is that normal?" Honest answer. It depends on what the piece needed, not what the clock says. But here's the pattern worth knowing. If a stage feels endless, one of three things is usually true: 1. You started too fine. The grit or compound you're on doesn't have the muscle for the damage in front of it. Step down. 2. The previous stage wasn't actually done. You're asking a finishing product to fix a cutting-stage problem. Step back and verify. If sanding use the sharpie trick. 3. Your consumable is dead. A glazed disc or a caked wheel stops cutting long before it looks worn out. Swap it or rake out and re-apply. Time spent fighting is almost always a diagnosis problem, not an effort problem. The magnet test (and why it saves pieces)
Before you touch any piece with sandpaper, grab a magnet. Aluminum and brass: Won't stick, they're non-ferrous. Stainless: Depends on the grade, some stick, some barely do. Here's the one that matters most: if a piece looks mirror-bright already and you're not sure what it is, assume it could be chrome plating over steel until proven otherwise. Why it matters: chrome is a coating a few thousandths of an inch thick. Sand through it and no compound on earth brings it back. That piece needs re-plating, not more polishing. A two-second magnet check plus a close look at the plating condition has saved more pieces than any technique I know. What's your pre-sanding check routine? Drop it below 👇

What's the deal with cloudy finishes?
Getting this question a lot, so let's put the answer where everyone can find it. If your finish has decent shine but never hits that true clear mirror. It stays slightly hazy no matter how long you polish. The problem is almost never the compound you're currently holding. It's a stage behind you. Somewhere in your progression, a coarser scratch pattern didn't get fully cleared, and the finer compounds and Airways don't always have the cutting power to fix it. They just polish those leftover scratches into shiny scratches. The fix: step back a stage and verify it's actually complete before moving forward again. The sharpie trick from Lesson 2.9 works for polishing stages too, not just sanding. What's the defect that keeps beating you? Drop it below. Good chance it makes Thursday's live call.
