"How long should this take?"

One of the most common DMs I get: "I've been at this wheel for four hours, is that normal?"

Honest answer. It depends on what the piece needed, not what the clock says. But here's the pattern worth knowing.

If a stage feels endless, one of three things is usually true:

You started too fine. The grit or compound you're on doesn't have the muscle for the damage in front of it. Step down.
The previous stage wasn't actually done. You're asking a finishing product to fix a cutting-stage problem. Step back and verify. If sanding use the sharpie trick.
Your consumable is dead. A glazed disc or a caked wheel stops cutting long before it looks worn out. Swap it or rake out and re-apply.

Time spent fighting is almost always a diagnosis problem, not an effort problem.
