Every Cast Has An Address
Since the Summer Solstice, I've hardly missed a day of being in a boat on Marion Lake... above crystal-clear water and beneath a shining sun - usually fishing. A whole lot happens in the boat. But something you'll never see is someone simply chucking their line out and hoping for the best. We fish at and cast to specific spots. The rock wall that drops straight into shadow. The ridge where the bottom falls away like a held breath. That particular tangle of pencil reeds & lily pads. Every cast has an address. (I don't think he ever did, but I can hear my Ol' Dad saying that.) We don't fish the lake — we fish that inch of water at the corner of the dock, or the shaded pocket under someone's boat lift, and when it lands exactly right, and the fish picks up your bait, and you set the hook... well... We have a saying for that. That cast deserved a fish. Something that has stood out to me this summer is how the strategy is so much of the fun. Precision. Pleasure with better aim. That's summer, to me. In Ayurveda it's the pitta season — sharp, hot, bright, quick to the point. Not a season built for drifting, but for seeing exactly where the structure is and casting right at it.
