Elder Wisdom
There's an old tree that I visit on my morning hike. Its roots run deeper than any of us can see, anchoring it through storms that have torn down newer, taller things. Its branches have grown broad and patient, offering shade to anyone who needs it — no questions, no conditions.
That's what elder wisdom looks like to me. Not loud. Not insistent. Just present, the way deep roots are present: holding ground that the rest of us can stand on. I am striving to cultivate the elder's energy that listens, inviting the noise of urgency to quiet down.
I can be quick to chase the new branches — the latest idea, the newest voice. But branches only reach that far because something below has spent decades drinking quietly from the dark. The wisdom of those who have lived longer than us is not a relic. It is the root system we forget we are standing on.
Find your elders. Sit with them. Ask them the questions you don't think they'll know how to answer. You may be surprised which roots run deepest.
