Okay this is going to sound absolutely bizarre, but I stumbled onto something yesterday...
I was having one of those practice sessions where my throat felt locked up - neck muscles wanting to bulge out, that squeezed sensation I've been fighting for months.
So I'm sitting there frustrated, and I literally yawned mid-practice. But here's the weird part - I was still humming when the yawn hit, and suddenly my throat opened up like never before! 😳
I tried recreating it (felt ridiculous doing "yawn-hums"), but it actually worked again. Something about that yawn reflex seems to reset whatever tension I build up in my swallowing muscles.
From what I understand, yawning drops your larynx and relaxes muscles I probably shouldn't be using anyway. Never thought to combine it with phonation though.
Has anyone else discovered weird "reset" techniques like this? My normal warm-ups don't always cut it when the tension gets bad.
