I am in the writer's weekly 24-hour short story contest this weekend. Here is the prompt. The story has to touch on it in some way but doesn't have to match it directly.
So, what story would you write with this?
There wouldn't be a garden this year. There was no longer any water, and the only source of light now was from candles. The animals had all been set free to fend for themselves. She was sitting on the bench with her forehead on the rickety table when ahe heard footsteps on the porch

When I'm doing something like this, the trick of it is not to go the obvious route. Think of something unusual. I'm curious to see what type of story you might tell with this prompt!
