" It is amazing that the Mother of God, in everything that was revealed to us in the Gospel, made us understand and gave us the boldness to come to her with this prayer, because we cannot say anything else. For us she is the Mother of God. She is the one who brought God himself into our earthly condition, in this sense I insist on the term "Mother of God." Through her, God became Man. He was born in a human state because of her. And she is not for us just an instrument of the incarnation. She is the one whose personal surrender into the hands of God, whose love for God, readiness to be whatever God wills, whose humility (in the sense of which I have already spoken to you) were to such a degree that God could be born of her. In one of the greatest saints and theologians of the 14th century there is a passage about the Mother of God in which he says that "the incarnation would have been impossible without that 'Behold the handmaid of the Lord' of the Virgin, in the same measure as it would have been impossible without the will of the Father", we encounter here a complete co-operation between her and God. Speaking of the incarnation and the attitude of the Holy Virgin, I think an English writer expressed something remarkable - it is Charles Williams in his novel All Hallows' Eve. He says about the incarnation that what determines its uniqueness is that "one day a virgin from Israel was able to pronounce the holy name with all her heart, with all her mind, with all her being, with all her body, in such a way that in her the word became flesh". I believe that this is a very correct theological statement, because it shows the place she occupies in the incarnation.
