Where's your favourite green space?
Today, I've been thinking a lot about our connection to the land and 'why' we have favourite places.
There's a few reasons we may have favourite places, perhaps the way we feel when we are there, the memories associated with a place, maybe it's the type of environment. Whatever the reason, we have these places where we feel 'connected'.
In Scottish Gaelic, there is a word Dúthchas. This word refers to a deep connection that people have with the land. It's more than just how it makes us feel, it's a sense of belonging, the intertwining of human and land, stewardship of the land too. I recently came across Tom Langhorne (Fandabi Dozi) who has hosted a very interesting talk with Ryan Dziadowiec on his You Tube page and I would encourage people to watch it. Ryan describes dúthchas as a much more complex word than we perhaps realise.
In any event, having a connectedness to the land, has always been an element of us humans, but are we losing it?
Being an outdoor educator, I have worked with various people in the outdoors and in a variety of locations. I come across people who absolutely love the outdoors and seems to feel that instant connection, though I have also come across people and more alarmingly lots of young people (ages 11-17) who seem to have little to no interest in the place, history and heritage of the area.
I'm really interested in why we are losing this connection with the land and I suppose our heritage along with it. Is it a Scottish thing? Is it a UK thing or is it happening globally.
Drop us a comment below and share your favourite green space and if you don't have one, or perhaps you don't feel a connection, let us know and we can begin to support recalibration and finding that connection outdoors.
Take care peeps ✌️
