How is everyone coping with the Heat?
We Brits love to talk about the weather. So now we’ve got lots to talk about ! But seriously how are you coping? For those on GLP-1s I always recommend Electrolytes but in this weather even more so If you’re on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, you’ve probably heard people talking about electrolytes. Some think they’re just for athletes. Others say they’re marketing hype. So here’s the truth. What GLP-1s do These medications slow gastric emptying and switch off hunger and thirst. You eat and drink less (often without even noticing) … add in nausea, diarrhoea or vomiting (common side-effects), and your body can quickly lose key minerals such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. That’s why the MHRA warns about dehydration and kidney injury in GLP-1 users (even those who aren’t exercising heavily.) (MHRA Drug Safety Update, 2024) Magnesium Matters Most!! Around 70 to 80 % of UK adults already fail to meet the daily magnesium target (At least 375 mg of elemental Magnesium). Magnesium is crucial for: Muscle and nerve function (including your heart) Blood pressure control Energy metabolism Glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity ( and much else besides) Modern soil depletion, food processing and ultra-processed diets make things worse. When you eat and drink less on GLP-1s, magnesium drops even further and fatigue, cramps, poor sleep and constipation can all follow. References: UK NDNS, 2019–20 DiNicolantonio JJ et al., Open Heart, 2018) Ways To Stay Balanced You 100% don’t need neon sports drinks! Simple, natural options work best: Homemade bone broth or stock Mineral water with a pinch of sea salt Leafy greens, avocados, nuts and seeds Low-sugar electrolyte sachets if you’re feeling tired or dizzy This isn’t “overloading” it’s just replacing what GLP-1s help you lose. Bottom line: GLP-1s change how your body handles food, fluids and minerals. Ignoring hydration can increase side-effects, slow weight loss, and harm your kidneys. Supporting electrolytes (especially magnesium) helps you stay energised, regular, and well.

What should Humans Eat?
Most nutrition debates start in the wrong place! They begin with calories, cholesterol, fibre, macros, food labels, government guidelines, or the latest social media argument about plant-based versus carnivore diets. But perhaps the better question is more fundamental: What kinds of food is the human body actually designed to eat? That is the central theme of my latest ProLongevity Podcast conversation with Sameer Dossani, a Johannesburg-based health coach whose own health journey forced him to challenge almost everything he once believed about food. You can watch the full episode here: What should we eat? Nutrition Lessons from 2m Years of Human Evolution. Sameer was not someone who ignored his health, in fact quite the opposite. He spent much of his adult life as a strict vegetarian, and earlier as a passionate vegan. He believed he was doing the right thing ethically, environmentally and nutritionally. But by his early forties, his health was failing. He describes developing features of metabolic syndrome and pre-diabetes, alongside autoimmune problems. That experience led him into the study of human biology, physiology, anthropology and the history of medicine. - And what he found made him angry! Not because people had deliberately lied to him, necessarily, but because he had been following advice he believed was healthy  and yet it appeared to be making him sicker. When “healthy eating” stops making sense One of the most striking moments in the podcast is Sameer’s story about eating a large bowl of porridge with banana, blueberries and honey before playing tennis. On paper, that sounds like the perfect “healthy wholegrain” breakfast. But in practice, he describes becoming so hungry by mid-morning that he had to stop playing. He went home and ate another bowl of oats. That was the moment he realised something was wrong with his physiology. That story matters because it captures a problem I see constantly. People are not failing because they are lazy, greedy or ignorant. They are failing because they are trying extremely hard to follow advice that does not work for their biology.

My latest podcast
It was interesting to interview New Zealand GP Dr Marcus Hawkins recently about his journey from traditional medical practice to advocating low-carb, ketogenic nutrition. He discusses the impact of diet on metabolic health, the failure of conventional guidelines, and innovative approaches to reversing conditions like diabetes and fatty liver, emphasizing the importance of historical and cultural dietary patterns. And of course GLP-1s came up ! https://youtu.be/oe9uksieceM?is=u2SKQ1k1GonZzsIp
How to Prevent Weight Regain After Stopping Mounjaro or Ozempic
Mounjaro and Ozempic are powerful tools for weight loss. But they are not a full plan. They reduce hunger. They quieten food noise. They help many people eat less. But when you stop, appetite comes back roaring back, food noise returns with interest and the old habits creep back in. That’s why most people regain the weight after stopping GLP-1 injections. But its not a failure of willpower. Its down to biology, pure and simple If you want the bigger picture, read our guide to Coming Off GLP-1s – What Happens Next? Why weight comes back after stopping Mounjaro or Ozempic GLP-1 drugs work well while they are in your body but when you stop the drug, your hunger signals return and your body tries to return to its previous weight. If you lost weight too quickly (so-called starvation mode) you may also have lost muscle. That matters because muscle helps you stay strong, active and metabolically healthy. Muscle burns much more calories than fat stores. So the 64,000$ question is not “How do I lose weight?” it is “How do I keep the weight off when the injection stops?” That is why you need a proper Mounjaro exit strategy, not just a final pen. The biggest mistake: stopping without an exit plan Millions of Brits are using, or thinking about using, Mounjaro, Ozempic or Wegovy. Many have a starting plan but almost no one has a stopping plan. That is a problem because if the injection has done all the work, stopping it feels like taking away the brake. Hunger returns. Snacks return. Portions grow. Weight creeps back. The solution is to build the habits before you stop (actually better still – make some changes before you even start!) For the bigger method, read The Science Behind Lasting Weight Loss. 7 simple steps to prevent weight regain 1. Do not crash diet Eating as little as possible may speed weight loss, but it can leave you tired, hungry and malnourished. You need protein, nutrients and real food.
