How to RESET after making a mistake
-Make a bad pass leading to an odd-man rush.
-Get caught chasing the puck leaving our man open
-Whiff on a pass or shot
-Take a dumb penalty late in a close game
We've all made mistakes at one time or another. And if you're like me, you feel pretty shitty about it. But that's part of the game.
What matters most is how you react to the mistake. Every instance has 2 potential outcomes...
  1. Dwell on it, grip your stick tighter, play super conservatively, and potentially lead to more mishaps.
  2. Take a deep breath, reassess the situation of what happened, and re-focus on how you will face the situation when it happens again.
Use the time on the bench to chat with your linemates about what happened; options you might not have seen; and work together to figure out how to better avoid or approach the next shift.
Dwelling on the problem makes us overly cautious and tense and often leads to additional mistakes. But if we assess what happened; take a deep breath to shrug it off; and look ahead to how we will attack the next shift, we can move ourselves into a more positive mindset that will lead to seeing more opportunities on which the team can capitalize!
What do you do to bounce back after a mistake?
Let's create a list of positive reactions we can all pull from.
