The Quiet Cost of Outdated Directions On Your Funnels (And How to Catch Them)
One of the most damaging leaks a funnel can have is also one of the easiest to miss.
Dead links.
Links that don’t go where they’re supposed to go..
or go nowhere at all.
Sometimes they come from templates.
A placeholder that never got finished.
A duplicated section that carried an old URL forward.
Other times they come from drift.
Pages get renamed.
Funnels get restructured.
Offers evolve.
Blog posts replace standalone pages.
Nothing “breaks” in a dramatic way.
But the links don’t keep up.
The result is the same either way.
A prospect clicks expecting value and gets “Page not found.”
Or they land on something that technically loads… but isn’t what you meant.
They don’t report it.
They don’t retry.
They just leave.
That’s lost trust.
And it’s lost revenue.
This is especially painful when the dead link points to a lead magnet, a funnel page, or a next step you’re actively sending traffic to.
And because the rest of the funnel still works, you can go a long time without realizing what’s happening.
Here’s how I manually audit a funnel hub when I want certainty.
Load the page.
Hold Cmd or Ctrl.
Click every link so it opens in a new tab.
If it loads exactly where you intended and has no additional links, close it.
If it doesn’t go where you expect, you’ve found a leak.
If it does go where you expect but contains links of its own… those need to be checked too.
Humans follow these paths.
Search bots follow them.
AI crawlers follow them.
Every dead end matters.
Dead links don’t show up because people are careless.
They show up because funnels evolve and inherit baggage from templates.
Templates and time both lead to funnel rot.
I’ve built a tool inside Funnel Pulse that spiders all of this in seconds and surfaces dead links automatically.
If you want to hear more about that, let me know.
But whether you use a tool or not..
If you care about revenue, you have to care about where your links actually go.
