Did I make a mistake?

My mentor recommeded I get PMP certified but I just saw the requirements to take the test. It says you need 3 years of experience (I have a Bachelors in Business Management) BUT it has to be within the last 8 years. I've been a stay at home parent for the last 11 years so my 9 years of military service and managing all the projects every class at University of Phoenix are all out of date...what do you all recommend? Thanks for the help.
