SELANK: WHAT IS IT?
🧠 SELANK: WHAT IS IT?
Selank comes up next to Semax in a lot of "brain peptide" conversations — but it's usually framed for calm, not focus. Here's what it is and what the research actually shows.
WHAT IT IS
Selank is a short, lab-made peptide (7 amino acids). It was developed in Russia as a synthetic version of tuftsin, a natural immune-related peptide, with a few added amino acids to make it last longer. In Russia it's used as a nasal drop for anxiety-related conditions. It is not approved by the FDA in the U.S. or in the EU.
WHAT PEOPLE USE IT FOR
• Calm / anxiety support
• Stress and mental tension
• Sometimes "mood" or anti-worry stacks (often paired with Semax online)
• Immune-related claims (from its tuftsin roots)
WHAT THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SHOWS
• Animals: studies report anxiety-reducing effects and changes in brain signals linked to GABA (the brain's main "calm-down" messenger). That is lab work, not proof for people.
• Humans: most studies are Russian clinical papers in generalized anxiety, neurasthenia, or related conditions. One older study compared Selank to medazepam (a benzodiazepine-class drug) in dozens of patients and reported similar anxiety relief with fewer sedating effects. Another looked at adding Selank to phenazepam. A smaller study reported help for adjustment-disorder symptoms vs a waitlist. These are small, regional, and have not been widely repeated by outside research groups.
• Healthy people: there is very little solid research on Selank as an everyday calm or focus aid for people without a diagnosed anxiety condition.
Evidence level: Early for its medical anxiety uses in Russia. Very Early to Anecdotal for healthy people using it as a daily "calm nootropic."
COMMON QUESTIONS
How is it different from Semax? Semax was built from a piece of ACTH and is mostly discussed for focus/stroke recovery. Selank was built from tuftsin and is mostly discussed for calm/anxiety. Same "Russian nasal peptide" family in online talk — different starting molecule and different main angle.
How is it taken in the studies? Mostly as nasal drops or spray — same route as most of the published work.
Does it feel like a benzo or a sedative? Russian papers describe anxiolytic effects without the classic benzodiazepine package of heavy sedation, dependence, and memory fog. That comparison comes from those regional studies, not from large Western trials.
Is it safe? Those Russian papers generally report it as well tolerated in their patients. Long-term safety data from independent studies, especially in healthy people, are limited.
EASY WAY TO REMEMBER IT
Selank = a Russian nasal peptide studied mainly for anxiety, often confused with Semax (which is more of a focus/stroke story).
BOTTOM LINE
Selank has more human history than most "calm peptides." But that history is mostly regional, older, and medical. Claims that it's a proven everyday anxiety or mood booster for healthy people go beyond the research.
