🌸 PROTEIN FOR WOMEN: HOW MUCH DO YOU REALLY NEED?
COMMON QUESTIONS What does that look like in real food? For a 150 lb (68 kg) woman, 0.8 g/kg is about 55 g a day. 1.6 g/kg is about 110 g a day. For reference, 3 oz of chicken has about 25 g, a cup of plain Greek yogurt about 20 g, and an egg about 6 g. Your clinician or a registered dietitian can help you find your own number. Is high protein bad for healthy kidneys? In healthy people, research has not shown harm at these intakes. People with kidney disease are different and need medical guidance. Does timing matter? Spreading protein across meals seems to work better than one big serving at dinner. ISSN suggests even portions every 3 to 4 hours. Do I need protein powder? No. Food works. Powder is just a convenient option. Will protein make me bulky? No. Muscle grows slowly, and building a lot of it takes years of hard training. For most women, more protein means firmer muscle and better strength. EASY WAY TO REMEMBER IT The RDA = the minimum. Active women and women over 40 = usually more, spread across the day. BOTTOM LINE 0.8 g/kg is a floor, not a goal. For active women, and especially in perimenopause and menopause, guidelines point higher. Pair it with strength training, and talk with your clinician about the right target for you. This is education only, not medical advice. We'll keep breaking down women's health one topic at a time in plain English.

🧠 LION'S MANE: WHAT IS IT?
Lion's Mane is everywhere right now: in coffees, gummies, and capsules. Here's what it is and what the research really says. WHAT IT IS Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom with a shaggy, white, "mane" look. It has been used in food and traditional medicine in East Asia for a long time. It contains natural compounds (hericenones and erinacines) that researchers are interested in for brain health. WHAT PEOPLE USE IT FOR • Memory and focus • Mood and stress • General "brain health" as they age WHAT THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SHOWS • Cells and animals: its compounds boosted nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that helps nerve cells grow and survive. Some animal studies also showed better memory. • Humans: a small number of small studies. One well-known Japanese trial in older adults with mild memory problems found better scores on a thinking test after 16 weeks, and those scores slipped after they stopped. A few small studies looked at mood and stress with mixed results. Studies in healthy young adults show little clear benefit so far. Evidence level: Early. Promising lab results, but only a handful of small human trials. COMMON QUESTIONS Does it regrow brain cells? That idea comes from cell and animal studies. It hasn't been shown in humans. Fruiting body vs mycelium, what's the difference? The fruiting body is the mushroom you can see. The mycelium is the root-like part. They contain different amounts of the key compounds, and products vary a lot. Many studies used specific extracts, not whatever is in a random gummy. How long did studies run? The better human studies ran for weeks to months, not one dose. Don't expect an instant effect like caffeine. Is it safe? It's a food mushroom and was generally well tolerated in short studies. People with mushroom allergies should be careful, and long-term supplement data are limited. EASY WAY TO REMEMBER IT Lion's Mane = a food mushroom with exciting lab results and only a small amount of human evidence.
