Was he RIGHT to pick a fight with Mexico to do it, then get all of Oregon territory up to the 49th parallel in a deal with England? Manifest destiny, the expansion of America, to control our hemisphere was promoted by former President Andrew Jackson who agreed with Polk. The United Stares in 2 years doubled the size of the U.S. by militarily taking the rest of Texas clear through to California in a remarkable victory! He then negotiated to take Oregon Territory.
