Field Note 004 // Commitment > Compliance
Truth:
Authority can force obedience.
But leadership creates buy-in.
You can take the Xbox. You can enforce bedtime.
You can punish disrespect. You can make your child do the dishes.
That's compliance.
But someday they'll leave your house.
Then what?
The goal is never to raise a child who behaves because Dad is standing over him.
The goal is to raise a man or woman who carries the standard when Dad isn't there.
And that's where discipline + curiosity comes in.
Standards and relationship.
Boundary and interest.
Strength and love.
Question:
Where in your fathering are you currently demanding compliance
when what you actually need to build is commitment through relationship?
Will post Ryan's Patriarch Live to the podcast this Saturday.
You'll be able to find it here.
