Most people try to force focus when they’re stressed. They push harder, drink more coffee, or try to “power through.” But the nervous system doesn’t work that way. There’s a simple, free tool that can raise focus and lower stress in under 60 seconds: the **Physiological Sigh**. I call it a SuperSigh! What Is the Physiological Sigh? You know when you see someone in a stressful moment and they take one of those deep breaths... that's your subconscious stepping in. You can use this tool whenever you feel the need. Here’s the exact method: 1. Sit or stand comfortably. Back straight if possible. Soften your shoulders. 2. Inhale deeply through your nose for about 4 seconds. 3. Without exhaling, take a second shorter inhale through your nose (this is the key part). 4. Exhale slowly and fully through your mouth for 6–8 seconds. 5. Repeat 2–3 times. That’s it. You can do this with your eyes open or closed. You can do it at your desk, in the car, before a meeting, when writing important info (to sharpen your mind) or when you feel your mind starting to race. The Biology Behind... The double inhale expands the tiny air sacs in your lungs (alveoli) more fully. This allows more carbon dioxide to be released on the long exhale. When CO₂ drops in a controlled way, your heart rate slows, and your nervous system receives a clear signal: “You are safe.” By doing this consciously you are hacking your calm/focus setting! This is why the Physiological Sigh is so effective for both **calm** and **focus**. It doesn’t just relax you, it clears mental noise so attention can return. Best Times to Use It - When you sit down to work and your mind feels scattered - After reading stressful news or messages - Before important calls or deep work sessions - When you notice tension in your chest, jaw, or shoulders - Mid-afternoon when energy dips and focus fades - At night if your mind is still racing, to help sleep onset Simple Practice Challenge For the next 7 days, try this: Every time you feel your attention slipping or your body tensing, do 3 SuperSighs.
