We just had a client that applied for Pen Fed credit union which usually and used to accept ITIN numbers for account opening.
This case started earlier in June and went through a couple of rounds of document submission.
And was denied as their fraud department would only accept SSN card and not the ITIN letter.
They phoned in and tried to go through a manager and say that the SSN card does not exist for ITIN holders and asked if they accept ITIN for accounts. and they said yes.
So the departments are conflicting, one dept says SSN card is needed (but don't exist) and the other says ITIN is fine.
Also, this client applied while credit report was new, we told him to wait another month but he wanted to try anyway...
so maybe if the credit report is aged and established more, the SSN card will not be requested.
Let us know your experience with Pen Fed and ITIN account opening.
