Last week I sat next to a Kansas City scout for multiple games and got to pick his brain on what he actually looks for when scouting players.
Obviously tools matter.
Speed.
Bat speed.
Arm strength.
Defense.
Athleticism.
But one thing he kept coming back to was competitiveness and hustle.
He flat out told me there are talented Oklahoma HS players he DIDN’T write up because of poor body language, lack of effort, not running balls out, jogging on and off the field, and playing the game with no urgency.
Talent opens the door.
Competitiveness keeps it open.
Scouts are always watching:
• How you respond after failure
• How hard you run
• How you carry yourself
• Your energy in between pitches
• If your teammates respect how you compete
A lot of players think scouts only evaluate tools.
They’re evaluating makeup too.
