I quit my 9-5. Substack gets most of the credit
Hey everyone. Good to be here. I'm Derek, a writer and creator based in Manchester. I run the Irresistible Writer which delivers practical writing tools to paid subscribers every week. I came to this the way most people do. Writing on the side, posting into silence, not entirely sure I hadn't missed my window. I kept going anyway. Now I run paid cohorts and live masterclasses, and earns enough that I handed in my notice. That part still catches me off guard when I think about it. The thing I'm probably most proud of sits outside the subscriber count. I landed paid commissions from national magazines and got radio work, without a platform, without contacts, just by understanding how to pitch. I've since built a programme teaching exactly that. Writing, for me, has always been the engine. Every piece you publish is a small asset. It finds people, builds trust, opens doors you didn't know existed. That's what I'm here to talk about. Looking forward to learning from everyone here.
New to substack but not to content creation :-)
Hi everyone, I help people create their dream homes without relying on cheap goods, cookie-cutter design ideas, breaking the bank or hurting the planet. I'm new to Substack. I've been podcasting about interior design for 10 years. Recently decided to make the show a mostly subscription based model. One episode per month is free. The rest are behind a ($5/month) paywall. I've also written a book ("Slow Style Home") that was published by Gibbs-Smith last year. Happy to be here and meet others. Not sure of the cultural norms on substack so I wasn't sure if posting your official bio was a thing or not. In case it is, here ya go: Zandra Zuraw is the author of “Slow Style Home” (Gibbs Smith, 2025) and host of the popular podcast of the same name. Zandra has developed a framework for teaching people how to create their own “dream homes,” without the generic vibe or disposable decor that’s so prevalent in today’s on-trend, social-media-fueled homes. In its first year, the “Slow Style Home” podcast landed on the coveted iTunes' New and Noteworthy list and is now in the top 5% of most downloaded podcasts across all categories, globally. The show has reached over 1 million downloads and counting. She’s been on many 10 ten lists for best design podcast, including the #1 spot for this year’s GoodPods list. She’s been featured in many media outlets such as Domino, Apartment Therapy, Better Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful, USA Today, and Podcast Magazine. Zandra has also been a speaker at several creative business conferences in the US and Canada talking about the business of podcasting and design.
