I created Life Lessons with Dolly because Dolly Parton’s story has always reminded me of something I deeply believe: Where you start does not get to decide where you finish. Dolly came from a tiny cabin in the mountains of Tennessee with big dreams, a whole lot of determination, and a willingness to remain herself even when the world told her who she should be. I’ll also be sharing a piece of my own Beyond Lemonade story. I grew up in a trailer park, and for a long time I thought success meant getting as far away from that life as possible. I raised two children while earning two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree, built a successful career in sports medicine, became a bestselling author…and then Multiple Sclerosis changed the life I had worked so hard to build. Turns out, some of the biggest lessons weren’t in escaping where I came from. They were in understanding what it taught me. Dolly’s philosophy reminds us that we do not have to be ashamed of where we come from. Our beginnings may have been messy, difficult, poor, lonely, or nothing like the life we dreamed of—but they still gave us lessons. They gave us strength. And hidden among the hard parts, there were blessings that helped shape who we are today. Accepting where you came from does not mean you have to stay there. You can love your roots while still reaching for something new. You are allowed to try—even when you aren’t certain you will succeed. You are allowed to learn something new. You are allowed to become someone your younger self could not yet imagine. Love where you came from. Carry the lessons. Count the blessings.
