Pendulum Curiosities
This morning I woke up in the mood to begin studying.
I felt like I had to put on my diffuser and rather than putting together a quick blend based on what I thought of as essential oils to stimulate and energize the mind and body, push back fatigue, promote congitive enhancement, concentration, focus, memory retention, recall and better understanding of the material being learned, I felt drawn to pulling out my brand new wooden pendulum to dowse for the response.
What the pendulum chose made me scratch my head a bit because I started to delve into its chosen oils.
May Chang (Litsea)
Litsea cubeba
Drops: 5
Note: Top
The High-Energy Spark Oil
Primary Compounds: Citral (Geranial 38.15% and Neral 30.50%)
  • Lifting the spirits when in a funk.
  • Uplifting to thought process and makes you look for the positive.
  • An oil that helps with optimism,  creativity, focus, and concentration
  • Calming and soothing to the nervous system
Mechanism: Acts as a powerful nervous system stimulant. The bright, citrusy aroma instantly triggers the release of uplifting neurotransmitters to crush physical and mental fatigue.
Why 5 Drops? I can only guess, but I believe it is because it forms the top note and dominant volume of the blend to ensure an immediate impact, which is highly energizing and refreshing.
Contraindications: Patients on bupropion antidepressants should avoid this oil.
Sweet Basil
Ocimum basilicum ct. linalool
Drops:
Note: Middle
The Cognitive Enhancer
Primary Compounds: Linalool (55.85%) and 1,8-Cineole (5.04%)
  • Stimulates and soothes
  • Energizes the mind, encouraging concentration and memory recall
  • Relieves mental anxiety, fears, doubts, mental fatigue, and brain fog
Mechanism: Sweet basil is a renowned neurotronic. The linalool chemotype is chosen specifically because it reduces anxiety and stress without causing drowsiness. Meanwhile, trace amounts of 1,8-cineole help stimulate local blood flow and modulate acetylcholine—the key neurotransmitter required for focus, concentration, understanding, and memory retention.
Why 4 Drops? I am assuming it is to provide a strong "heart note" that sustains mental clarity and memory recall over several hours, keeping the brain sharp without feeling jittery.
Contraindications: Not to be used in pregnant, breastfeeding, on babies or children. Not to be used if undergoing hormonal/oestrogen cancer treatment.
Myrrh
Commiphora myrrha
Drops: 2
Note: Base
The Mental Anchor
Primary Compounds: Furanoeudesma-1,3-diene(30.97%) and Curzerene (21.17%)
Mechanism: Myrrh acts as a sedative to a hyperactive mind while remaining a stimulant to a sluggish one. It grounds the intense, flighty energy of May Chang and Basil, allowing the brain to actually absorb, process, and retain information rather than just racing through thoughts.
  • Cooling and Calming effect on the emotions.
  • Helps you to stay resilient and strong.
  • Brings positivity, acceptance due to its uplifting and energizing nature.
  • An Oil of wisdom and confidence, it brings you to that aha moment when a piece of the jigsaw is missing.
Why 2 drops? It is a heavy "base note." In a low quantity (2 drops), it prevents the fast-evaporating citrus and herbal oils from vanishing too quickly. It also provides the quiet, deep focus needed for long-term memory enhancement without overpowering the blend's energising purpose.
Contraindications: Not to be used in pregnant, breastfeeding, or on babies and children. Not to be used if undertaking treatment for oestrogen-related cancers.
About the dilution:
Normally, I would diffuse only 6-8 drops maximum in my diffuser; however, the pendulum disagreed and wanted me to use 11 drops.
According to numerology, 11 is considered a Master Number that signifies spiritual illumination, psychic awareness, and visionary insight. It relates to cognitive functions like memory recall and focus, not as a scientific tool, but as a symbolic representation of a highly receptive subconscious mind and heightened mental clarity.
Memory Recall and Retention: In traditional esoteric systems, the number 2 (and by extension, the 11) is heavily associated with the High Priestess archetype—the keeper of hidden knowledge and the subconscious repository of all memories. Therefore, 11 represents a deep, almost subconscious access to memory, where forgotten details surface as sudden "knowing" or intuition.
Focus and Concentration: Because 11 vibrates at such a high frequency, the mind can easily get overwhelmed by "nervous energy" or anxiety. Focus for an 11 requires a conscious effort to ground this intellectual energy. It asks you to harness your focus not through rigid logic alone, but by balancing intuitive flashes with disciplined action.
Cognitive Enhancement: In numerology, cognitive enhancement is viewed as an expansion of consciousness rather than just brain function. Achieving this "enhancement" means opening the mind to receive higher inspiration and clarity, which is often cultivated through meditation and self-reflection.
