This diffuser blend is not one of mine, but by Aromatherapist Pat Princi-Jones from her book A Scented Life: Aromatherapy Reimagined.
The blend is called Balance.
Geranium's rosy scent is balancing. Combined with other treasured florals, it helps comfort the heart and regulate the hormones.
- 2 drops Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens var roseum)
- 2 drops Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
- 2 drops French Lavender Vera (Lavandula angustifolia)
- 2 drops Rose Otto (Rosa x damascena)
- 2 drops Tangerine (Citrus reticulata var. tangerine) *
My Notes:
(had some help with A. I specifically focus on the Ayurvedic Doshas and Chinese Principles as I am not that familiar with Eastern concepts.
* If you don't have Tangerine, you can substitute it with either Red Mandarin (Citrus reticulata), or if you don't have it, just use Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil.
This also makes a beautiful massage blend if you add it to a Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) or Sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus).
Add all essential oils to 30mls (1 fl oz) of fixed oil, and you will get a 1.66% dilution.
The Aroma/Pefumery Notes:
I simply love the aroma of this particular blend with its heavy middle/heart notes.
It uses the sparkling, zesty, joyful, and opening top note Tangerine, clean, herbaceous, and balancing middle note French Lavender, Sweet, fruity-green apple-like middle note Roman chamomile, fresh, green, leafy-rose Medium-base note Rose Geranium, and deep, rich, floral, sensual, very rosy Base Note Rose Otto, which acts as a fixative in this formulation.
The first impression of smelling this blend is that I get a sense of brightness, with a splash of joyful citrus and a clean, relaxing herbal drift.
As it diffuses, the citrus fades into a rich, green, nectar-like floral aroma. It reminds me of my Italian Grandmother's sun-warmed garden filled with fresh cullinary herbs, her various apple varieties she grew, and her beloved rose bushes.
The aroma continues to develop, eventually settling down into what I can only describe as a deeply comforting, luxurious, warm aroma that seems to ground my entire bedroom/study, which is where I am diffusing this. A sense of calm, tranquility, and peace has settled over me in this space. I am feeling very relaxed yet not lethargic.
As I am very interested and am studying Western Astrology and Western Medical Astrology, I would like to go into this first before going into the Therapeutics and other Energetic Associations for this formulation.
For those who do not know, to summarise medical astrology in the context of Aromatherapy, plants and essential oils are governed by specific planetary rulers and zodiac signs. These cosmic associations dictate how the oils interact with our energetic anatomy, the microcosm of the body, and the four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water).
By looking at the individual planetary rulers, we can see exactly why this blend targets the heart, endocrine system, and spiritual balance.
The Planetary & Astrological Profiles of the Individual Oils:
Rose Otto (Rosa x damascena) & Rose Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
- Planetary Ruler: Venus ♀️
- Zodiac Sign: Taurus ♉ (Earth) and Libra ♎ (Air)
- Medical Astrology Rulership: Venus rules the homeostatic balance of the body, fluid retention, the venous circulation, the kidneys, the female reproductive system, and the throat. Rose specifically rules the spiritual and emotional heart.
- Cosmic Action: Venus brings cohesion, beauty, and harmony. It softens rigidity and cools irritation. Rose Otto acts as a cellular balm, while Rose Geranium specifically targets the Venusian feedback loops of the endocrine and reproductive systems.
Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
- Planetary Ruler: The Sun ☀️ (with secondary Lunar 🌙 calming traits)
- Zodiac Sign: Leo ♌ (Fire)
- Medical Astrology Rulership: The Sun rules the vital life force (Archeus), the physical heart, the spine, and the distribution of heat. Its secondary lunar connection influences the stomach and the parasympathetic response.
- Cosmic Action: Chamomile holds solar, golden energy that dispels the shadows of depression, yet its specific chemistry cools "solar flares" of anger and ego. It distributes vital solar warmth to the solar plexus, calming nervous tension in the gut.
French Lavender Vera (Lavandula angustifolia)
- Planetary Ruler: Mercury ☿️
- Zodiac Sign: Gemini ♊ (Air) and Virgo ♍ (Earth)
- Medical Astrology Rulership: Mercury rules the central nervous system, the brain, the respiratory tract, the five senses, and the rapid transmission of neural impulses.
- Cosmic Action: Mercury is the messenger. Lavender acts as a cosmic nervous system regulator, calming the hyper-electrical, erratic static of an overstimulated mind. It bridges communication between the brain (Mercury) and the heart (Venus).
Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)
- Planetary Ruler: The Sun ☀️
- Zodiac Sign: Leo ♌ (Fire)
- Medical Astrology Rulership: Rules the vital spirit, cardiac strength, cellular vitality, and the generation of joyous, metabolic heat.
- Cosmic Action: Tangerine injects pure, unadulterated solar light into the blend. It clears stagnant, dark, or heavy emotional debris (Saturnian or Plutonian congestion) through radiant, warm expansion.
The Astrological Impacts on the Blend’s Three Core Actions:
Action 1: Comforting to the Heart (The Sun & Venus Conjunction)
In medical astrology, the heart is a dual energetic zone. The physical pump and vital spark are ruled by the Sun (Leo), while the emotional capacity for love, grief, and relationships is ruled by Venus.
- The Cosmic Mechanism: This blend creates a virtual Sun-Venus conjunction in your space.
- Therapeutic Blast: The solar oils (Tangerine and Chamomile) strengthen the vitality and rhythmic steady-state of the physical heart. Simultaneously, the Venusian oils (Rose Otto and Rose Geranium) soothe emotional trauma, spasm, and constriction.
- Result: It protects the heart from the cold, restrictive energy of Saturn (grief, isolation) and the burning, volatile energy of Mars (rage, high blood pressure).
Action 2: Regulating the Hormones (The Venus & Moon Axis)
Hormonal health requires a delicate dance between Venus (estrogen, progestogens, and skin/tissue elasticity) and the Moon (fluids, cycles, tides, and the subconscious stress response).
- The Cosmic Mechanism: When the nervous system is hijacked by a stressed Mercury (anxiety) or an aggressive Mars (adrenal burnout), the endocrine system suffers.
- Therapeutic Blast: Lavender (Mercury) calms the mental static, telling the brain it is safe. Rose Geranium (Venus) steps in to soothe the erratic hormonal tides.
- Result: This planetary teamwork balances the internal lunar rhythms, smoothing out painful periods, hot flushes, or cortisol spikes caused by cosmic or environmental stress.
Action 3: Balancing Mind, Body, and Spirit (The Four Elements in Equilibrium)
A truly balanced formulation must address all four astrological triplicities (Elements) to ensure complete alignment.
- Air (Intellect & Nervous System): Lavender and Rose Geranium clear the mental plane, stopping cyclical thoughts and calming a scattered mind.
- Fire (Vitality & Digestion): Tangerine and Chamomile stoke the inner fire gently, preventing the blend from becoming heavy, stagnant, or depressing.
- Water (Emotions & Hormones): Rose Otto heals the emotional body, promoting fluid, healthy expression of feelings without drowning in sadness.
- Earth (The Physical Frame): The grounding properties of Chamomile and the earthy undertones of Geranium anchor these higher spiritual frequencies directly into the physical cells.
How This Cosmic Geometry Works Together?
The Neuro-Cardiac Axis (Mercury ☿️ + Venus ♀️): French Lavender (Mercury) calms the overactive thoughts in the brain, while Rose Otto (Venus) opens and relaxes the chest. Astrologically, this opens the pathway between the mind and the heart, converting mental stress into emotional peace.
The Vital Core (Sun ☀️ + Moon 🌙): Tangerine and Roman Chamomile act directly upon the Solar Plexus and Heart (Leo/Sun core). They ensure that the vital life force (Archeus) is distributed smoothly, preventing the physical body from succumbing to fatigue or energetic stagnation.
The Fluid & Hormone Balance (Venus ♀️ + Moon 🌙): Rose Geranium and Roman Chamomile work in tandem to soothe the internal cycles. Venus governs the structural hormones, while the Moon governs the fluctuating fluids and emotional tides, ensuring smooth transitions during times of physical or emotional stress.
The Therapeutics & Energetics of this Formulation:
This diffuser blend functions as a potent therapeutic and energetic formula due to its specific molecular makeup and botanical synergy. When inhaled, these essential oils bypass conscious thought to alter both neurobiology and subtle energy systems simultaneously.
Comforting to the Heart
The "heart" represents both the physical cardiovascular system and the emotional center of grief, vulnerability, and love.
Therapeutic Mechanisms (Physical & Neurochemical) of this diffuser blend:
- Parasympathetic Activation: Inhaling French Lavender Vera and Roman Chamomile triggers an immediate shift from the sympathetic "fight-or-flight" system to the parasympathetic "rest-and-digest" nervous system.
- Vasodilation and Blood Pressure Regulation: Rose Otto contains phenylethyl alcohol (1.56%) and geraniol (18.13%), which have been clinically shown to decrease sympathetic activity, lower blood pressure, and reduce epinephrine (adrenaline) levels. This physically calms palpitations and tightness in the chest.
- Limbic Emotional Processing: Volatile monoterpenes navigate the olfactory bulb directly to the amygdala and hippocampus. They downregulate the panic and threat responses, often physically felt as a "heavy heart."
Energetic Mechanisms (Subtle Anatomy)
- Anahata (Heart Chakra) Resonance: Rose Otto has one of the highest measured bio-electrical frequencies of any essential oil. Energetically, it opens the heart chakra, encouraging emotional processing, self-compassion, and healing from deep-seated grief or trauma.
- Protection and Vulnerability: Roman Chamomile behaves as a protective energetic shield, allowing a wounded heart to relax and receive healing without feeling overly exposed.
Regulating the Hormones
While inhaled essential oils do not directly contain hormones, they act as powerful neuromodulators that regulate the master endocrine glands in the brain.
Therapeutic Mechanisms (Physical & Neurochemical)
- Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis Regulation: High levels of linalool, 26.08% in Lavender & 5.65% in Geranium, and linalyl acetate, 40.07% in Lavender and 0.06% in Geranium, inhibit the overproduction of cortisol (the stress hormone) via the HPA axis.
- Endocrine Adaptogen Support: Rose Geranium acts as an adrenal adaptogen. Its primary chemical markers (citronellol - 33.44% and geraniol - 12.89%) gently stimulate or calm the adrenal cortex, depending on what the body requires, balancing fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels during PMS or menopause.
Energetic Mechanisms (Subtle Anatomy)
Yin-Yang Balancing: Rose Geranium balances masculine (yang) and feminine (yin) energies within the body's internal feedback loops. It stabilizes the "Qi" (vital life force) of the liver, which Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) binds directly to smooth hormonal movement and the regulation of cycles.
Balancing the Mind, Body, and Spirit
A state of true equilibrium requires sedating overactivity (anxiety/inflammation) while gently uplifting underactivity (depression/sluggishness).
Therapeutic Mechanisms (Physical & Neurochemical)
- The Mind (Neurotransmitter Modulation): Linalool in Lavender binds to voltage-gated calcium channels, mimicking the calming action of GABA (the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter). Isobutyl angelate (33.70%) and other esters (51.02% other esters) in Roman Chamomile act as profound central nervous system sedatives to stop racing thoughts.
The Body (Systemic Homoeostasis):
- Tangerine provides a high concentration of d-limonene (75.2%). This compound stimulates the production of glutathione (a master antioxidant) and clears out cellular stress. It cleanses the physical system while alleviating muscular tension caused by emotional stress.
The Spirit (Neuromodulation of Joy):
- Citrus compounds stimulate serotonin and dopamine pathways in the brain. This counteracts the heavily sedative nature of the floral oils, ensuring the user experiences a bright, peaceful state of awareness rather than drowsiness.
Energetic Mechanisms (Subtle Anatomy)
Chakra Synergy (Root to Crown):
- Tangerine stimulates the Solar Plexus and Sacral Chakras, sparking joy, creativity, and inner warmth.
- Lavender and Chamomile soothe the Throat and Third Eye Chakras, clearing mental chatter and allowing honest self-expression.
- Rose Geranium and Rose Otto connect the lower chakras to the Heart and Crown, unifying the physical self with spiritual peace.
Ayurvedic Doshas and this Formulation:
This specific diffuser blend functions as a universal tri-doshic balancer, meaning it harmonises all three Ayurvedic constitutions: Vata (air/ether), Pitta (fire/water), and Kapha (earth/water). It achieves this by soothing Vata hyper-reactivity, cooling Pitta inflammation and intensity, and uplifting Kapha stagnation.
Vata Dosha (Air & Ether) — The Principle of Movement
Vata governs the nervous system, communication, and movement. When out of balance, it manifests physically as insomnia or palpitations, and mentally as anxiety, fear, and racing thoughts.
Balancing Mechanisms
- Sub-Dosha Focus (Prana Vayu & Vyana Vayu): Prana Vayu resides in the head and governs inhalation and sensory intake. Vyana Vayu resides in the heart and governs circulation.
Therapeutic Action: The heavy, grounding, and sweet molecules of Rose Otto and Roman Chamomile directly counter Vata’s light, cold, and erratic qualities. They anchor Prana Vayu, anchoring the mind and halting racing thoughts. Meanwhile, French Lavender regulates Vyana Vayu, smoothing out the physical rhythm of the heart.
Energetically: This blend acts like a warm blanket for a scattered mind, providing the boundaries and stability that Vata lacks when stressed.
Pitta Dosha (Fire & Water) — The Principle of Transformation
Pitta governs metabolism, digestion, and intellect. When out of balance, it manifests physically as inflammation, hot flushes, or skin eruptions, and emotionally as anger, judgment, impatience, and criticism.
Balancing Mechanisms
- Sub-Dosha Focus (Sadhaka Pitta & Ranjaka Pitta): Sadhaka Pitta is located in the heart and processes emotions, transforming raw experiences into wisdom. Ranjaka Pitta resides in the liver and governs blood chemistry and hormonal precursors.
- Therapeutic Action: Rose Geranium and Rose Otto are profoundly cooling (Sheeta) and sweet (Madhura). They directly pacify Sadhaka Pitta, cooling down emotional heat, resentment, and hot tempers. Rose Geranium also has an affinity for the liver, soothing Ranjaka Pitta to assist in smooth, anger-free hormonal transitions.
- Energetically: Roman Chamomile dissolves the tight, controlling, ego-driven grip of an aggravated Pitta, encouraging surrender and emotional softening.
Kapha Dosha (Earth & Water) — The Principle of Structure
Kapha governs stability, lubrication, and fluid balance. When out of balance, it manifests physically as lethargy, congestion, and water retention, and emotionally as attachment, depression, and mental stagnation.
Balancing Mechanisms
- Sub-Dosha Focus (Avalambaka Kapha & Tarpaka Kapha): Avalambaka Kapha resides in the chest and provides emotional and physical cohesion. Tarpaka Kapha resides in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, ruling over emotional calm and memory.
- Therapeutic Action: A purely floral, sedating blend could aggravate Kapha, leading to more lethargy. However, the inclusion of Tangerine provides a sharp, light, dry, and warming counter-note. The d-limonene in Tangerine stimulates Tarpaka Kapha, cutting through mental fog and stagnation.
- Energetically: Tangerine lightens the heavy, protective fluid shield of Avalambaka Kapha in the chest. This allows the heavy heart-healing properties of Rose and Lavender to penetrate without causing emotional attachment or melancholia.
Cultivating the Three Vital Essences (Maha Gunas)
In Ayurveda, true balance requires the cultivation of three subtle forces: Prana (vital life force), Tejas (inner radiance/metabolic fire), and Ojas (immunity, fluid youthfulness, and spiritual stamina).
- Replenishing Ojas: Rose Otto and French Lavender are premier Ojas-building botanicals. They nourish the deep energetic reserves of the body, repairing burnout caused by chronic stress or overworking.
- Stoking Tejas: Tangerine gently fans the flame of Tejas, ensuring the mind retains its cellular intelligence, clarity, and discernment without turning into destructive Pitta heat.
- Directing Prana: Roman Chamomile and Rose Geranium ensure that Prana flows smoothly through the Nadis (energy channels), removing the psychic blocks that create emotional and physical stagnation
Safety & Contraindications:
Rose Otto:
