Silent Letters Challenge
Week 1 Challenge 🎙️
Every week, I’ll post a short text for you to read out loud and record yourself. This is one of the best ways to improve your pronunciation because it helps you notice your mistakes and track your progress over time. Here’s how it works: 1. Read the text out loud and record yourself. Don’t overthink it; just do your best! 2. Upload your recording in the comments so you can get personalized feedback. 3. Only after you’ve recorded yourself, listen to my audio. Think of it as an answer key. Compare your pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation with mine. 💡 Pro tip: Save your recording! In 3 or 4 weeks, record yourself reading the exact same text again. You’ll be surprised by how much you’ve improved.
Week 1 Challenge 🎙️
The Pledge of Allegiance: Shadowing
Jerry, one of our community members, recorded this video teaching the Pledge of Allegiance, and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to introduce you to one of the most effective pronunciation techniques out there: shadowing. So, what is shadowing? Shadowing is when you listen to a native speaker and imitate them as closely as possible. You’re not just repeating the words. You’re copying their pronunciation, rhythm, intonation, connected speech, and even the way they pause and emphasize certain words. Here’s how I’d like you to do this challenge: 1. Watch Jerry’s video once all the way through. 2. Then watch it again, pausing after each sentence. 3. Repeat exactly what he says, trying to imitate his pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation as closely as possible. 4. Once you feel more comfortable, try saying longer sections without pausing or even the entire video from memory! I’ve also included the transcript below to make the exercise easier. Feel free to read along at first, but little by little, challenge yourself to rely less on the text and more on your listening. When you’re done, come back and let me know in the comments: - Was it easier or harder than you expected? - Which sentence was the most challenging? - Did you notice any sounds or words that were difficult to imitate? I can’t wait to hear how it goes. Happy shadowing! 🇺🇸🎧

Pronunciation Corner 🎤
Welcome to the Pronunciation Corner! This is the place to ask any pronunciation questions you have. If you’ve ever wondered, “How do I actually say this word?” or “Why doesn’t this sound like it’s spelled?” I also encourage our native English speakers to join the conversation and help answer questions, share tips, and give feedback. The more perspectives you get, the better! To get us started, here are a few words that many Brazilians struggle with because the pronunciation is very different from the spelling: - queue (line) - aisle - muscle - bomb - calm - plumber Feel free to add any words you’ve always had trouble pronouncing, and let’s practice together! 🎉
