The Imitation of Christ thoughts on chapter one
In chapter one he says, “If though knowest the whole Bible and sayings of all the philosophers, what should all this profit thee without the Love and Grace of God?” This is a wonderful reminder to us to remember to give the Love and Grace of God actively. In the world we see the opposite usually and sometimes it’s hard to not take on some of the worldly ways if we’re not careful. It can be difficult to give Love and Grace when we ourselves are the one hurt by someone else’s sin. But, it is imperative that we do! This inner struggle can be like a dance for a while, we may stumble in our anger as God calls us to forgive. For he says in Ephesians 4:26, “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath" is a biblical injunction from Ephesians 4:26 (KJV) that acknowledges anger as a natural emotion but warns against letting it fester into sinful, unrighteous, or destructive behavior. It advises immediate resolution to prevent harboring resentment, which can give a "foothold" to the devil. Some sins that have been committed against us can be so hard to forgive. We don’t realize in this time when we’re angry, upset, or hurt by what another has done to us that the wound which we were given actually becomes where Gods light will ultimately start to shine through. We bring that light into the world with us shining this light outwardly without even knowing the light is there. People see it but don’t even realize they’ve seen this light sometimes in a person. We must remember we are all human, and as those who transgressed against us also for us who have such a hard time forgiving sometimes. The dance between anger and asking for forgiveness for the anger can prolong, depending on circumstances. I have struggled with this myself. But ultimately in my heart the Lord resides and therefore always comes to forgiveness. I do not believe the Lord wants us to be so divided but to remember we are human and make mistakes also. He wishes us to be one. We are all one, we are not separate from one another just all at different levels on our earthly journey.
