SWALLOW YOUR PRIDE. 🏀
You HAVE to swallow your pride if you want to become a better basketball player.
You are NOT the best player to ever touch a basketball. And you’re not going to be the best player on every court you step on.
At some point, you’re going to play with someone better than you. Someone who scores more, shoots better, handles the ball better, or gets more attention from coaches.
What are you going to do about it?
Are you going to pout because you aren’t getting the ball? Get frustrated because you aren’t taking as many shots? Or are you going to figure out how to help your team WIN?
Look at Devin Booker on the 2024 Olympic team. This was a guy who had been one of the best scorers in the NBA, yet he embraced a different role. He defended, fought through screens, took charges, and did the little things that helped Team USA win gold.
He didn’t need to be the leading scorer. He needed to be the player his team needed him to be.
THAT is what high school basketball players need to understand.
You might be the star of your JV team, but when you get called up to varsity, you might have to earn your minutes by defending, rebounding, setting screens, and making the extra pass.
You might be the leading scorer on your high school team, but when you get to college, you might have to start by playing defense and earning every second on the floor.
And guess what? THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
Stop worrying about your points, your touches, your minutes, or whether you’re getting the recognition you think you deserve.
Start asking yourself:
🏀 Am I making my teammates better?
🏀 Am I defending at a high level?
🏀 Am I doing the little things that help us win?
🏀 Am I willing to accept a role that challenges my ego?
Because coaches don’t just want players who can score. They want players they can TRUST.
The players who last are the ones who can adapt, sacrifice, and contribute in different ways. The players who help winning basketball happen, even when the spotlight isn’t on them.
You don’t always have to be THE guy. You just have to be a guy your team can count on.
Swallow your pride. Accept your role. Master it. And when your opportunity comes, be ready for it.
Your ego won’t win championships. Your ability to put the team first might.
