CHANGE PACE → EXPLODE 🔥
The best players don’t play at one speed.
They use change of pace to control the game — slowing down to read the defense, speeding up to create an advantage, and constantly forcing defenders to react to their rhythm.
Change of pace is especially valuable when:
🏀 Breaking pressure — change speeds and directions to disrupt the defender’s positioning instead of trying to outrun pressure every time.
⏱️ Controlling the clock — slow the game down when you need to manage possessions, then accelerate when it’s time to attack.
🎯 Running the offense — manipulate pace to create passing windows, shift help defenders, and get the defense moving before you attack.
But the change of pace only matters if you can explode out of it.
The goal isn’t just to go slow → fast.
It’s to go slow → shift the defender’s weight → EXPLODE downhill.
That sudden acceleration is what turns a rhythm change into a real advantage. Research on sprinting and change-of-direction performance consistently shows that acceleration requires the ability to rapidly apply force and reposition the body — which is why your first few steps after the pace change matter so much.
This drill combines all of it:
Ball handling → Change of Pace → Read → Downhill Explosion.
Don’t just train your handle.
Train your ability to control the game with it. 🔥
