How do you give a stuck team a new direction?

I have a CI/CD DevOps team that got pulled into other priorities for a while. Now the original plan doesn't fit anymore and they're struggling to refocus.

So I stepped in to help. The "re-doing" the plan is actually not that hard. The harder part is the new vision. How do you give a team a direction they can believe in when they've just been through a rough stretch?

What I decided to do was to break the vision into smaller pieces so that they can have a win per week. If the pieces are right, the bigger picture comes together on its own.

Have you ever had to rebuild direction for a team that lost its way? What worked and what didn't?
