We spend so much time in our jobs, how to reassess what a career is.
Having worked in organisational design and talent management for decades, finding someone who truly loves their job most of the time, isn't that easy. Some enjoy their role for a while due to a team, leader or the product. Many stop and say, nope, I don't want to do this.
Here are some points to consider where any change can make a positive or challenging difference.
The 3 Issues Identifier - are you in:
  1. The right team/leader?
  2. The right job/part of the business?
  3. The right organisation/industry?
Sometimes, people are in the right job but it is the boss or the company that isn't working out.
Others are in the right company but what a difference if they move to a different part or business unit.
Other tips:
  • Forget the 5-year plan - some of the roles people will take on haven't been invented yet or needed. Think of app developers/web designers just a few years ago.
  • If in doubt about what you want to do, ask what don't you want to do? All about refining the focus.
  • Sometimes taking a sidestep can change the trajectory. Take the same job but in a more dynamic organisation and there is a chance you can move up or across to the role you want.
  • Apply for jobs you would love to do but where you don't have all the skills - I call this the 70/30 application. Sometimes a recruiter will see that the 30% part can be trained.
It is all about the diagnosis and reframing of the current scenario.
