This is an important question because I’ve seen many self-published authors publish their books, set them, forget them—and then wonder why they aren’t getting the results they anticipated.
Take a moment to look at your book and ask yourself:
How are people actually finding my book?
For me, it’s always important to start with a solid foundation. If your goal is to generate organic sales—even when you aren’t actively promoting—you need to publish around topics people are already searching for.
So, how do I do this?
I conduct research before I start publishing using a tool called Publisher Rocket. This helps me identify topics with sales potential while also evaluating the competition. I want to make sure there is an opportunity for my book to be discovered rather than publishing in a market that is already oversaturated. Doing this research helps set a strong foundation for my book—but there is still more work to be done!
Your book might be discovered through:
📱 Posting videos about your book on social media
📢 Running Amazon ads
🌐 Leveraging book promotion websites
🎙️ Appearing on podcasts or collaborating with other creators
📧 Sharing your book with an email list or online community
Amazon’s search traffic can help create organic sales, but we can’t always rely on Amazon to do all the marketing for us. The more pathways you create for readers to discover your book, the more opportunities you have to generate sales.
So now I’m turning the question over to you:
How are people finding your book?
Be honest with yourself. Have you been consistently promoting your book—or did you publish it and then move on?
Are you happy with your current sales results, or have sales been slower than you anticipated?
