Struggling with jazz bowing?
It’s the number 1 thing that classical players ask me about when first getting into jazz.
It’s often a lot simpler than you might think, mechanically most of the same rules apply.
The first rule for me is to listen to yourself and check that you don’t have too much tension in your right arm.
The second is to make sure you can hear swing in your head and to try and find a way a to make what you hear happen on your violin.
I have a free jazz bowing course in the Classroom section on here with a number of different exercises to try and get some of that swing out.
They aren’t going to solve anything but there some repetitive “practise along” videos in there designed to help you lock in. Try out the course and let me know what you think.
Let me know in the comments any of the issues you ah e come up against with bowing when playing jazz. Il try and help.
