Lick of the Week
Challenge! Record your version of this, depending on what’s doable for you, either… In the original key (C Major over a G7) In a few other keys Inside an improvisation over a standard Or as we did last night in practise club, see below… We worked on this one in practise club last night. We took the pattern that this line is based on and played it all the way through all the chords in the C major scale, helping us understand why the melody works and how we can use it. What does this do? Helps us navigate the major scale with patterns and enclosures Drills the sound into our ears and fingers Serves as a technical exercise for our left hand If you are interested in trying out the jazz violin practise club for freejust send me a message or comment on this post.

This is such a fab lick I’m enjoying slotting it into Bossa Nova, but I’m not sure if it’s artistically appropriate !,, does anyone know or have an opinion? this is girl from ipanaema in d flat major , my lick is in and e flat 7 bar then again in G7 . Glad I can play ornithology in bflat I threw that in the end for fun. Really I’m not quite sure how much swing language translates to Bossa, mainly I have to play less notes, slower and more melodic. Does Charlie Parker even fit here as it’s too slow? I don’t know and my band members don’t recognise it as they are in Bossa world… anyway it’s a fun exercise even if poor Jobim would be turning in his grave…
Whole tone line
Still trying to get the whole tone scale into my playing. You might have noticed Iv smushed some of it into our monthly etude on Indiana? Working on this line, getting it into a few keys so I can practise it up every time I get a minute. If you want the full etude, join one of my paid plans (prices going up at the end of the month) https://www.skool.com/jazzviolin/plans

Sounds good. I’m laughing because today I threw in a whole tone bit in the middle of girl from Ipanaema. But when I start doing a whole tone lick I kind of play it in the style of capital letters, like hey guys did you just spot how clever that moment was! Your lick sounds more casual of course! I’ll steal it tomorrow …
Transcription Lab
Hi all, Starting next month I will be holding a monthly session on Zoom for VIP members where we share transcriptions that we are working on. Even if it’s just little sections of solos or even just a few lines. Spots to share will be limited but all VIP members can come along. I’m holding the first session on Tuesday 3rd at 6pm If you’d like to share something in the first session, comment ‘I’m in’ and I’ll add you to the list.

This is a great idea, do you mean that we get to play our transcriptions, along with the original , to the group ? I’ve spotted these people on instagram who sing their transcriptions of famous jazz tunes , it’s all fun and shows good timing etc What do you mean by « sharing « transcriptions? I never write mine down, too lazy so I couldn’t share that…

Thanks very much Matt! I’m so glad that I asked you the question, I was practising putting things through the cycle of fifths, ten years ago, but I had completely forgotten that I did that and also had no idea why. So I’m going to go back to it, especially as now I have to play in more difficult keys , in what I used to Call « the underworld » of my cycle , which gets neglected in gypsy jazz for example. It’s such a good point that we are all at different places in our journey and some need to re visit the basics, as I tackle girl from ipanaema in d flat etc etc . Each of us has to work out the right exercise for where we are « now », what we most need to learn, as well as the general workout of those zoom sessions which are basically fun! Ps it ties into my « learning new tunes » question as bringing back the cycle of fifths makes learning new tunes much easier, as you say , it’s everywhere in all music ( that I play )
Answering your Questions
Hey all, I'll be doing another Q&A style livestream next week (Monday 2pm UK time) Priority given to my Premium and VIP members but anyone can ask anything you want about learning jazz violin. Let me know in the comments. There will be a video of this after the stream so dont worry if you cant make the timings. Matt

Hi Matt, I have a question which reflects maybe the fact that I have not had a formal jazz education. When I first started learning Jazz, I learnt the cycle of fifths… now I recognise the cycle of 5 ths in lots of jazz standard chord progressions. And I talk to other musicians who say knowingly about a tune » it’s just cycle of fifths » and I nod, as if that helps! How do we put the cycle of fifths( or fourths going the other way) to good use in our improvisation over jazz standards? .
