Grappelli played piano as well as violin. He is quoted as saying that the piano was his main love the violin was his “gimmick”
He spent many years “jobbing” around Paris playing in various different musical ensembles as a pianist, playing different American songbook tunes as well as popular French music of his time.
This gave Grappelli an extremely deep knowledge of harmony which I think is displayed greatly in his violin playing.
