If I'm listening to the backing track in here, how do I record at the same time? Or are you using two devices...

@Viktor Houf Hi Viktor, thank you! I thought I was missing something but it sounds a bit complex. Two devices will have to do, I think!

@Marianna Schaffer Thanks so much, that's great to know!
What are your Sunday plans?
I’m off to play two gigs today. First one is a background jazz gig in a hotel. Second is a listening gig in a pub in south east London (the Royal Albert Pub 8.30) I had 20 minutes to collect some charts for my own tunes and some arrangements before I left today. Most of the band have never rehearsed these ideas with me before so will be fun to see how it works out. I’d like to find some time to practise in the middle of the two gigs but it’s not likely. What are you up to?

Unusually busy today but managed to play the wee pattern you showed us yesterday on fiddle and mandolin. Really feel like you're going to bring me down to my real level and help me progress!
READ ME-Recording yourself
Hi all a little step by step for recording yourself playing with a backing track easily. Had a few questions about this so thought I would clarify. This is the most simple way to do it but you will need 2 devices. (Most of us have this nowadays I’m sure) 1. You will need a laptop/pc with inbuilt speakers or that have speakers attached/bluetooth 2. Make sure you can hear the backing track coming out of those speakers 3. Set up your phone to record you and the backing track. Doesn’t need to be amazing picture quality just make sure we can see you play 4. Hit record then press play on your laptop Let me know if you have any questions.

That was great, thanks so much. I love this breaking things right down to simple elements, so helpful after years of trying to keep up with so much that was way above my head!

Would you mind saying again what the two chords were that formed the basis of the D7 pattern that you taught us in the session yesterday? The chromatic enclosure (??) one?

I'm Tamsin, from Scotland. You're all very impressive on here! My background is untypical for what jazz demands. Classical from 8-12, only got to grade 2, then nothing until my 20s. I was convinced it was too late to pick it up then and tortured myself listening to Sugarcane Harris, Jean Luc Ponty, Eddie South, Claude Williams, Papa John Creach like a kid locked out of a sweet shop. Played a bit of Scottish stuff for a year or so, discovered Shakti and Zakir Hussain, Sid Page, gave up again. Started playing along to Regina Carter about 20 years later, developed my playing by ear. Went to jazz courses for a while but overwhelmed myself with theory and Jamie Aebersold exercises. Haven't been playing for years but recently picked up my mandolin inspired by Bluegrass and Americana songs. Desperate for simple structures and slowness now, taking things step by step instead of trying to digest it all at once (and then throwing up).
