In some sumo matches, the winner is given a ้ฏ๏ผใใ / tai๏ผ, a type of sea bream.
But why tai?
In Japan, tai is considered a lucky fish. Its name sounds like part of the word ใใงใใ (medetai), which means โauspiciousโ or โcelebratory.โ
Because of this, tai is often served at special occasions like weddings and festivals.
The tradition of giving tai in sumo comes from this idea of celebration and good fortune.
Sponsors began offering tai as a prize to mark an important victory, especially in big matches.
So when a wrestler receives a tai, itโs not just food โ itโs a symbol of success, luck, and celebration.
