🇯🇵 Sumo Fact: Why Do Winners Get a Tai? 🐟
In some sumo matches, the winner is given a 鯛(たい / tai), a type of sea bream.
But why tai?
In Japan, tai is considered a lucky fish. Its name sounds like part of the word めでたい (medetai), which means “auspicious” or “celebratory.”
Because of this, tai is often served at special occasions like weddings and festivals.
The tradition of giving tai in sumo comes from this idea of celebration and good fortune.
Sponsors began offering tai as a prize to mark an important victory, especially in big matches.
So when a wrestler receives a tai, it’s not just food — it’s a symbol of success, luck, and celebration.
