Since I was a kid, Iβd dreamed of going to Australia, but money and health always got in the way. At the start of 2024, I decided this was the year. My health was in a good place, and I didnβt want to risk waiting in case things took a turn. Two weeks later, I was on my first long-haul flight, heading off on my biggest solo adventure yet.
I spent my time in Perth and a tiny island called Malloy Island, soaking in the beauty of Australia while unknowingly ticking off multiple bucket list goals:
β
Leave Europe for the first time β Straight to Australia!
β
Fly a plane β Yes, really. More on that below. π
β
Swim and stroke stingrays β Majestic, slightly terrifying, 10/10 would do again.
β
Catch a fish β Or six. Who knew I had hidden fishing skills? π£
The most unexpected? Flying a plane. A casual suggestion from my friend:
βWanna fly my plane at sunset?β
Me: ββ¦Obviously, yes.β
Now, this wasnβt just any plane. It was one he had repaired after it had broken (which, in hindsight, I probably should have questioned more). So there I was, in a tiny, slightly sketchy flying tin can, soaring over the Australian coastline at sunset. Absolutely breathtaking. Absolutely terrifying. And in that moment, I realisedβ¦ I really donβt enjoy being in control of an aircraft. ππ
But I came back from that trip proud, not just for the things I did, but for proving to myself that I can travel the world now. No more waiting, no more βone day.β Iβm healthy enough to go after it, and thatβs exactly what I plan to do. π«
Would you ever fly a tiny plane like that, or is that a hard pass for you? πβοΈ
