The Difference Between Potential and Results
Talent gets attention.Self-control and discipline decide how far you go.
🔑 SIMPLE DEFINITIONS
Self-Control The ability to govern your emotions, actions, mouth, and choices — even when it’s uncomfortable.
Discipline The ability to do what needs to be done, consistently, whether you feel like it or not.
Self-control is the decision.Discipline is the daily execution.
🏀 A REAL STORY (WHY THIS MATTERS)
Growing up, I was blessed.
My grandmother instilled discipline off the court:
- Work hard
- Respect adults
- Listen to coaches
- Show up on time
- Handle your business
Those values carried me far in life.
But here’s the honest part 👇I didn’t always have enough self-control.
I struggled to say no to:
- Certain people
- Certain places
- Certain distractions
And I didn’t always have the clarity to fully see where I was headed.
That lack of self-control didn’t erase my talent —but it limited how far I could go.
That’s a lesson I don’t want your child to learn the hard way.
🧠 WHAT SELF-CONTROL LOOKS LIKE FOR ATHLETES
Self-control means:
- Running when you don’t want to run
- Being quiet when you want to react
- Speaking up when it’s uncomfortable
- Making the right choice when no one is watching
It’s controlling:
- Your mouth
- Your body
- Your emotions
- Your decisions
Champions aren’t perfect — they’re controlled.
📈 WHY DISCIPLINE CHANGES EVERYTHING
Discipline:
- Builds trust with coaches
- Creates consistency
- Protects confidence
- Extends careers
Discipline can take an average athlete far.A talented athlete without discipline will always hit a ceiling.
👨👩👧 PARENTS — THIS PART MATTERS
Discipline is taught at home and trained in the gym.
Parents reinforce it by:
- Holding standards without emotional swings
- Supporting structure, not shortcuts
- Teaching kids to delay gratification
Basketball rewards the disciplined long before it rewards the gifted.

“What’s one area where I need more self-control?”
Parents:Ask your athlete:
“What’s one habit we can tighten up together?”
Small adjustments compound fast.
