(Damon Thomas, Stevie Wonder, and the two speeds of a door.)
Family, no class from me tomorrow, Tuesday. When we miss class in this Academy it is
for a DAMN good reason, and the reason is the lesson. Dr. Kosine is still very much
active in the business, and tomorrow I am walking through two doors on the same
day.
Door one: Damon Thomas. One half of The Underdogs. The records that man made raised
half of you. Last Tuesday I taught you Part 1, the network that gives, and I told
you I called an OLD number, not a cold one. That number was Damon. I have been
cultivating that relationship since JULY. Calls, a first session in his room, his
son in the room, him posting my record on his page, sessions since. It took us
MONTHS to complete one song together. Think about that. Months, for one record, with
a legend who already likes me. Tomorrow I am back in his room.
Door two: Big Phil. Yesterday I went to check out 1888, the new spot Big Phil just
opened. I did not know the man. I walked in as my own manager and my own agent,
which is exactly what I keep telling you to be. Two minutes. Two minutes later I was
in the private room in the back, being poured exclusive tequila by Big Phil
himself, invited to Stevie Wonder's listening party tomorrow night, and I left with
my next residency booked at 1888.
Same week. Same me. One door took two months. One door took two minutes.
That is the lesson. Some relationships take months, sometimes years, to harvest. You
water them, you show up, you finish the song. And some are Johnny on the spot: you
walk in prepared, you ask, and the back room opens. You do not get to choose which
one you are standing in front of. You only get to choose whether you show up and
ask. Say it with me, the way I said it at Columbia: You have not because you ask
not. Twenty seconds if you have never heard it:
So I am not skipping class. I am doing the homework in front of you.
What I need from you tomorrow: still meet. Tuesday, 5 PM Pacific, in the Skool video
room right here in the app, NOT on Zoom. That is the protocol when I am not there:
the Zoom room is my classroom, the Skool video room is yours. The first person in
the room runs the floor.
Run it the way we run it:
1. Testimony first. Who did the contact audit? Read your categories out loud. Who is
in your "gives" column and who is in your "takes" column?
2. Two doors, two moves. Pick one OLD number you have been watering and decide the
ask. Then pick one place you have been meaning to walk into and go this week, as
your own manager, two-minute style.
3. One person posts the notes here by 7 PM tomorrow night. Who called who, where you
walked in, what you asked for. I will read every one from the listening party if I
have to.
Tuesday the 29th is Part 2: what happens when the network takes. The writing camp I
hosted for a major TV network, how they met every writer I curated, and what it cost
me. Bring your contact audit finished.
The intern never graduates. Go build.
