Dr. Kosine is still very much active in the business, and tomorrow I am walking through two doors on the same day. Door one: Damon Thomas. One half of The Underdogs. The records that man made raised half of you. Last Tuesday I taught you Part 1, the network that gives, and I told you I called an OLD number, not a cold one. That number was Damon. I have been cultivating that relationship since JULY. Calls, a first session in his room, his son in the room, him posting my record on his page, sessions since. It took us MONTHS to complete one song together. Think about that. Months, for one record, with a legend who already likes me. Tomorrow I am back in his room. Door two: Big Phil. Yesterday I went to check out 1888, the new spot Big Phil just opened. I did not know the man. I walked in as my own manager and my own agent, which is exactly what I keep telling you to be. Two minutes. Two minutes later I was in the private room in the back, being poured exclusive tequila by Big Phil himself, invited to Stevie Wonder's listening party tomorrow night, and I left with my next residency booked at 1888. Same week. Same me. One door took two months. One door took two minutes. That is the lesson. Some relationships take months, sometimes years, to harvest. You water them, you show up, you finish the song. And some are Johnny on the spot: you walk in prepared, you ask, and the back room opens. Your homework this week: 1. Listen to 3 WIN songs. Identify one thing each song does exceptionally well. 2. Take one of your own songs and make it sync ready. Bounce the instrumental, export your stems, and identify 3 moods that describe the record. 3. Get your business clean. No uncleared samples. Know your splits. Have the paperwork handled. 4. Bring one song you truly believe is a WIN song and tell us what you hear it scoring in your head. A movie scene? Commercial? Sports moment? TV show? This isn’t just about making great music.
