Principles of Success (Day 2: PRIORITIES)
Yesterday we talked about the first principle of success as described in "The Rhythm of Life" by Matthew Kelly (more here : principles-of-success-day-1-purpose). Today we delve into the second principle: Priorities. (Just a small but important note, the term success here can be applied to many areas of life, and ultimately, it's really just about intentionally becoming the best version of yourself.)
(side note, we just recently talked about this here: your-life-is-full-is-it-full-with-what-matters , but since I'm following the principles as enumerated in the book, it's coming up again!)
2. Priorities
"If it's a priority you'll find a way. If it isn't, you'll find an excuse" -Jim Rohn
Here's a fun fact of life: We don't have time for everything. The sad part about this is that if we don't carve out time and apply our energy towards the things that we say that matter, other things will fill up that space.
It kind of reminds me of the 'law' of the empty purse. It's the idea that an empty purse never stays empty for long. If there’s space, something will go into it. And if we don’t choose intentionally what fills it, it will be filled by whatever is closest, easiest, or loudest even if it’s useless.Sometimes we even fill it with other people's things "can you hold this for me?" And then the tendency is to want a bigger bag (more time) rather than to take a look and see what's in there. This applies to attention, time, identity, relationships, and desire. When something feels like it's missing (meaning, belonging/connection, direction/purpose) we don’t always sit comfortably with the emptiness...We rush to fill it and that sense of urgency/discomfort makes us careless. We reach for distraction, validation, consumption, busyness, control, or approval. Junk goes in faster than nourishment because it requires less thought.
The danger isn't emptiness/quiet/too much time, the danger is when those things are unexamined. Emptiness creates hunger/restlessness and those things without discenrment and intentionality lead to poor substitutions.
We're not going to have time for everything, but we do have time for some things, so carving out time for what matters most is important.
"What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important". -Dwight Eisenhower
