Are conductors really necessary?
Someone told me a story about how, when the conductor couldn't come, the orchestra simply followed the first violist, aka concert master. That got me thinking... "I mean, are conductors really necessary??"
I've played enough "chamber music" - aka music in small ensembles without a conductor - that I've learned how to rely on the other musicians and myself to know when to come in, what tempo to go, etc...
Playing without a conductor certainly necessitates more independence than playing with one!
Acting independently - it's a critical skill for improvising! Come practice it tonight with me in Improv Games 😎
