My sister would have been 40 today.
She passed away on March 7, 2015, and for whatever reason, I made the “mistake” today of going back and looking through her Facebook.
That hit me a lot harder than I expected.
I’ve always thought I handled her birthday and the anniversary of her passing pretty well over the years. But today made me wonder if maybe I didn’t handle it as well as I thought. Maybe I just got really good at blocking out some of the feelings and carrying on.
Seeing her pictures, reading old posts, seeing her name and little pieces of a life that feels both so long ago and like yesterday brought a lot of it back.
Grief is strange like that.
You can go months or years feeling like you’re okay, and then something small opens a door you thought you had closed. A picture. A song. A birthday. A memory. And suddenly the sadness is right there again.
But I also think that’s part of loving someone and losing them. You don’t necessarily “get over” it. You just learn how to carry it while continuing to live your life.
There are going to be hard days. There are going to be moments when sadness wins for a little while. And I think it’s okay to let yourself feel those moments instead of always trying to push them away.
Then you keep going.
You work. You laugh. You raise your family. You build things. You make memories. You appreciate the people who are still here. And you carry a little piece of the people you’ve lost with you through all of it.
Life keeps moving, and somehow we find a way to move with it.
Happy 40th birthday, sis.
Wish you were here. ❤️
