You don't have to accept their anger.
We often unknowingly absorb the heavy poison of those who mistreat us, carrying a burning resentment that slowly consumes our own energy. When we continually replay the pain they caused and allow bitterness to take root in our minds, we are essentially drinking their venom and expecting them to suffer. This exhausting cycle of anger binds us intimately to the very people who hurt us, allowing their unresolved darkness to continuously infect our precious, everyday peace.
The Buddha perfectly illustrated the ultimate defense against this in the Akkosa Sutta, teaching that if someone offers you a bitter gift of abuse or anger, and you consciously refuse to accept it, that heavy burden remains entirely with the giver. Recognizing that a person who continuously inflicts pain is deeply trapped in their own agonizing cycle of Kilesas (mental defilements) is never about gloating over their karma. It is a highly active, courageous realization that their harmful behavior is a manifestation of their own profound internal torment, not an accurate reflection of your inherent worth.
You possess the absolute, sovereign right to refuse delivery of their misery. Actively choosing to lay down the exhausting burden of resentment is not a free pass for their behavior; it is the ultimate, magnificent declaration of your own spiritual dignity. Grant yourself the unapologetic grace to leave their dark storms exactly where they belong—within them—while you bravely step forward into the unshakeable, radiant sanctuary of your own healing.
