Scheduling loads

As a dispatcher, how far in advanced do schedule your carrier’s loads?

My husband is often trying to get loads as soon as he drops one off. I feel like he should be working ahead. For example, today he dropped off a load from Sparta Illinois (picked up on friday) to Panama Beach FL. He waited until he dropped off the load this morning to look for other loads but couldn’t find anything. It just doesn’t feel like the best strategy. We really need a dispatcher but feel like we can’t afford it so are trying to do everything ourselves.
