My First Carrier, You wont believe this.
So there are alot of people that are asking "HOW" did you get your first carrier? This is how I got mine and where it has taken me. This is un natural. Here we go............
So I hit DU like I was going to get executed if I didnt complete the whole course and halfway know what I am doing. I started October 15th 2025. I did everything and learned all there was to learn in about 3.5 months. I did have set backs like $$ even though it was not much, at the time it was sooooo much. My computer took a dump, older iMac that would not do updates anymore.
I started posting content on FB. My very first carrier went to my web page and booked an appointment. I just ended up calling him as soon as I got his contact information that landed in truk.ai, I noticed it probably a couple days after it landed. I didnt understand it all at that time. So I called him and he answered. He instantly told me he was a driver for 30 years and he got back in with a bad ass Hot Shot set up. He told me he HATES Brokers and their lying tactics, he would argue with them and it would get very heated when he would pop them on those lies. He said he is done dealing with them and needs a dispatcher. I went for the juggler and sent him the contract and list of items needed to get him going. I did not know he has full blown diabeties at this time. After gathering all required and completeing the onboarding and signing the contract. YES I sold it at 10% and NO I have never worked for free even when my ad said FREE for 14 Days. Most real people in this business will NOT care what it costs them to help them succeed, make more $ and relieve the stress. If they are serious 10% is cheap.
So he called me up and said I need to postpone starting because of his diabetes. He looses his vision, it is bad. So I put him off on the sidelines. I did get a lead from here in DU, that was my second one. From there it went very slow. I got another carrier from them then a Box Truck from my content. I ended up firing the Box Truck, he was a back stabbing snake. He called me in Florida stuck and he couldn't get out. I booked him $5500 in 3 days and landed him right back in Florida 10 miles at a drop from his house. He called me and said "DAMM you took care of that like nothing and with ease, are you feeling me Louis? You know what I am trying to say? I said yes and Thank you" I pitched him again to be his full time dispatcher, he agreed and the next week started. He told me he wanted to leave on Monday, so I started looking all weekend to learn. I booked him a load and he never told me he left on Sunday booking his load with his "other dispatcher" I was like WHAT? He never told me, booked with his other dispatcher and I booked him a good load for Monday. I heard that and I immediatly told him well, good luck I do not work for your anymore. Bye. He called me 2 times over the next week, I never answered that call. That was a learning experience for me.
The first carrier finally called me back and said he was ready. I booked him only 1 load and his health took another crap and that was it. We ended up hiring a driver for his set up so he dont need to drive anymore. Before all this I called him and asked if he would be willing to do "Lease On" he said yes, we hit it off like we are brothers our whole lives, it is meant to be. He is not educated with computers or how to get stuff done. He signed a Full POA with me to handle all aspects of his business, I created the lease on contract etc and we were off to the races. Off the gate I got 3 Hot Shots that included his. That right there is over 9k per month income. I hit that probably in my 7th month.
In the beginning, I thought I might be wasting my time but all the work I was putting in to get here was in the bank and at this time all that work I put in was showing itself right at the door. This is where it really shifted. I hired a few more carriers that did not work out and I fired them. One of them that I fired had a HS that I did for him. This guy was leased on to his authority. This authority has 4 Dry Vans but he would not let me dispatch for them. He thought he had it all under control, until he didnt. He was booking loads that would not factor for all his drivers and could not get the paperwork that the Factoring Company needed to process his payments. That got to about 20K and he finally callled me. He lost his direct shipper that kept them busy on out going loads, he would book his own back and then go back to that shipper whenever he came back into town and pick up another. Out of the blue without warning they fired him for NOT using his ELD's. There was no fixing it, Fired gone now.
When he called me he wanted to know how to get ELD's and set up through Highway. I did just that, set him up with HOS 24/7, Loves Factoring, Delegated emails so when brokers will only send to what is onfile with the FMCSA. I also am getting him set up for LogRock. I will have full control to make sure we get paid on it all. I will have multiple authority's doing Lease On for all that need the help. Most do they are not gifted in that way to handle it themselves. I am.
So I had 3 HS carriers and I was started to dedicate myself to growing it organically, and that is what I did. I did fire one of the HS guys this week as I am setting up the 4 new Dry Vans which should taken care of by Monday. The guy I fired totally disrespected me, my friend was sick and about to die so I left work early. He got pissed off and let me know it. He called me going to beat me up and all this crazy talk. I said guess what, your FIRED. I don't put up with it, this is business and I am not your damm kid or wife or anyone that you can put your foot on. He says Ill meet you and beat your ass. I just laughed. We both calmed down and made it ok, tomorrow is a new day. Well that new day went all bad, he called me and did it again. I make him GOOD $, booking him $7050.00 of loads in less than 2 days, he couldnt believe it. I dispatched for him for about 1 month. His first load of the week was always on Monday. He always wanted to be back Thursday night or Friday morning so that is what we did. We always hit 6+ K in that time. IT was all good until the disrespect. He bit the hand that was feeding him and got FIRED for it.
Anyway, I now have 2 HS and 4 Dry Vans all with no $ spent on advertising. I did do a FB ad and they really messed it up. My spend was $20.00 a day and they started taking $580.00 a day. I got Frauded out. The credit union got all the $ back after me proving the spend was capped at $20.00 a day. Nothing came of any of it for me but I did not quit.
My income went from nothing to be on trac for really close to 30k to me a month and I have not shifted into second gear yet.
Also throught all of this I have made 4 relationships with brokers and their direct shippers. They send me loads for bid where I am the only bidder and I am booking consistant loads paying very well. Example: they sent me a load to bid. Fontana CA to Georgia. 2338 loaded miles. He said Louis, after we start working together you will not need to use a load board anymore. We have so many loads for Dry Vans we will keep you busy forever. I said that sounds good and sent a bid for $4.00 per mile at $9500.00, he comes back and says that is understandable, can we meet at $9K ? I said let me call the driver and make sure. Driver agreed and that load was locked down in 10 min total with me getting my 10% at $900.00 just for 1 load. That is a WIN in any book. Now we are ramping in all 4 Dry Vans. This is only 1 of the relationships I have developed. Soon the load board will be only used for back up or loads back.
The moral of all this is, do the work even if you can't see how it will ever take off in the direction you head out on, things will pop up, doors will be shut on purpose to take you where you are suppose to be.
Keep at it and don't quit on yourself. Keep up the fight, if something is in your way push it out of the way and run it over to get where you want.
