🌱 Seed Starting Done Right – Day 4 of 5 When to Pot Up (And When to Leave Seedlings Alone)
There’s a moment in every seed-starting season when you look at your trays and think:
“They’re ready… right?”
The leaves look bigger.
They seem crowded.
You’re itching to do something productive.
But potting up too early can slow seedlings down instead of helping them.

Those first two little leaves?
They’re called cotyledons (seed leaves).
They help the plant get started but they don’t count when deciding to pot up.
What you’re waiting for:
✔ At least one set of true leaves
✔ Stronger stems
✔ Roots beginning to fill the cell
True leaves look like the plant’s actual adult foliage.

It’s usually time when:
* Roots are visible at the bottom of the cell
* Soil dries out very quickly
* Seedlings have 1–2 sets of true leaves
* They’re starting to compete for space
This is growth-driven timing not calendar-driven timing.

Hold off if:
* Only seed leaves are present
* Stems are still thin and delicate
* Soil is still moist for days
* Roots haven’t reached the edges of the cell
Potting up too early forces roots into more soil than they can manage.
That can slow growth and increase overwatering risk.

When it is time:
* Move up only one size (don’t jump too big)
* Use light, well-draining mix
* Water lightly after transplanting
* Keep strong light immediately afterward
The goal is minimal shock.

Seedlings grow in phases.
If you wait until roots are ready, they adjust quickly and surge forward.
If you rush them, they stall.
And stalled growth feels confusing when it was just timing all along.

Seed starting is exciting.
But the strongest plants come from steady, well-timed decisions.
Let roots lead.
You’re guiding not pushing 🌱
Are you already potting up… or watching and waiting?
