January Garden Planning โ€œQuick Startโ€ Checklist (So Spring You Isnโ€™t Scrambling) ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ
January is sneaky. It feels like the garden is on pauseโ€ฆ but itโ€™s actually the perfect month to set yourself up for an easier, more successful growing season. Especially for container gardeners.
This isnโ€™t a โ€œspend 6 hours planningโ€ kind of post.
Itโ€™s a quick-start checklist you can do in small bites...15 minutes here, 20 minutes there and still feel wildly more prepared.
โœ…
Grab a note in your phone or planner and answer:
* What grew really well for you last year?
* What struggled (and why, if you know)?
* What did you wish you had grown more of?
* What did you grow that you didnโ€™t even use?
This one step saves you from repeating the same frustrations.
โœ…
Make a quick tally:
* How many pots do you realistically have space for this year?
* Any youโ€™re not using because theyโ€™re cracked, too small, or annoying?
* Do you need a couple of โ€œworkhorseโ€ sizes (like 5โ€“10 gallon) for bigger crops?
Most people plan for more plants than they have containers for. This is where the chaos begins. ๐Ÿ˜„
โœ…
To keep planning simple, choose 5 main things you definitely want to grow.
Examples:
* tomatoes
* peppers
* lettuce/greens
* herbs
* cucumbers
* strawberries
* dwarf beans
* flowers for pollinators
You can always add fun extras later, but picking your top 5 first keeps you focused.
โœ…
Container gardening success is mostly:
Ask yourself:
* Which spots get the most sun (balcony, patio, porch, brightest window)?
* Which spots get morning sun only?
* Which spots are shaded?
* Any spots blasted by wind?
If you want to be extra organized, take one photo of each growing area and label it:
โ€œFull sun / partial / shade.โ€
โœ…
Now match your top 5 to what youโ€™ll use:
* What youโ€™ll grow from seed (easy + fun)
* What youโ€™ll buy as starts (time saver)
* What you want in backups (because life happens)
This prevents the โ€œI bought 42 seed packetsโ€ moment. ๐Ÿ˜‰
โœ…
Donโ€™t buy everything, just identify what youโ€™ll actually need.
Common container restocks:
* potting mix (or ingredients to refresh old mix)
* perlite (drainage helper)
* seed starting mix
* seed trays/cells
* labels + marker
* fertilizer plan (slow release or liquid)
* supports (stakes/cages/trellis)
Even knowing what youโ€™re low on helps you catch sales and avoid last-minute runs.
โœ…
If you start seeds, choose one of these โ€œlevelsโ€:
Start 1 or 2 things only (like herbs and lettuce).
A tray, a light, and 3 to 4 crops (tomatoes/peppers/herbs/flowers).
Multiple trays, a system, and a schedule.
Thereโ€™s no โ€œrightโ€ level, only what youโ€™ll actually follow through on.
โœ…
This keeps planning exciting instead of just practical.
Examples:
* try one new variety youโ€™ve never grown
* do a โ€œsalad potโ€ (greens + herbs)
* grow a pollinator flower pot
* grow one dwarf fruit plant
* try microgreens indoors
โœ…
This makes it real. Pick:
1. a planning day (like this weekend)
2. a seed-order day
3. a seed-start day (or โ€œsetup dayโ€)
You donโ€™t need the whole season scheduled. Just a few anchors to set the stage.
Thatโ€™s it. Youโ€™re officially ahead of the game.
What are your Top 3 plants youโ€™re most excited to grow this season?
Are you starting seeds this year? If yes, whatโ€™s your set-up โ€œlevelโ€? Simple, Small Shelf, or Full Seed Season?
